Disorganized Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is divided into types. Most types of schizophrenia have certain symptoms in common such as auditory and / or visual hallucinations.  Disorganized Schizophrenia  (also known as hebephrenic schizophrenia) is the most severe type and usually presents itself in the early teens but has been seen in  some younger patients. Like all forms of schizophrenia, the patient will lose touch with reality. This is generally referred to as psychosis.

person who suffers with this condition may not be able to function on any reasonable level. We may see them homeless on the streets unable to maintain a normal living environment since they can not engage in logical thinking. At times they are seen muttering to themselves and their speech will be incomprehensible.

The symptoms of this type of schizophrenia can be quite severe. Due to the disorganized thinking patterns, the person with Disorganized Schizophrenia  can become very confrontational and may engage in aberrant behavior in public. Hallucinations are very common and you will often find the disorganized schizophrenic trying to answer the voices that are part of an hallucination. They may be frightened by what only they can see and hear and become frantic and hostile.

Many of those suffering from this severe form of schizophrenia will try to “self medicate” by abusing drugs and alcohol. Chain smoking cigarettes is also very common for the individual with  Disorganized Schizophrenia. These factors cause them to be at serious risk as far as their health is concerned. Suicidal thoughts and behavior are also common for the person with this mental health condition.

Although there is no clear information on what the exact cause of this is or any other form of schizophrenia, there are certain factors that seem to increase the chances of someone developing a type of schizophrenia.  A family history of schizophrenia is an important risk factor.  The abuse of psychoactive drugs can alter the brain chemistry causing schizophrenia. There is also research that connects exposure to certain viruses and toxins while in the womb as a risk factor.

Disorganized Schizophrenia, like all other forms of schizophrenia, is a chronic mental disease and treatment must be ongoing. Medication known as anti- psychotics are the primary course of treatment. These medications alter the brain chemistry to restore its balance. Anti- psychotics can be very effective in managing the symptoms of this mental disorder. There are side effects that come with these medications. They include but are not limited to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight gain.

Psycho-therapy is a very important part of the treatment plan for  Disorganized Schizophrenia.  This course of treatment is effective in helping the patient cope with this mental health disorder.

Electroconvulsive therapy, also known as electric shock treatments, may be the most effective why to treat  Disorganized Schizophrenia.  The electric current that passes through the brain during this treatment is very effective at significantly reducing the symptoms of   Disorganized Schizophrenia.
